Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Chestnut Avenue (A170). This north-easterly facing photograph of Chestnut Avenue was taken from a short slip road, in an area called 'The Square' that links the avenue with 442166.

Ahead is Chestnut Avenue from left (westerly) to right (easterly). Some 40 metres to the left (westerly) Chestnut Avenue ends at a 441947. The A170 continues westward as Pickering Road. To the north is 441962 and to the south is Malton Gate. Chestnut Avenue represents the 'centre' of Thornton-le-Dale and having parked their cars it is the first location that tourists come to. The village was originally called just plain Thornton - and still is by locals. 'Dale' was added to the name in the 1800s when railways came to the area so as to avoid confusion with other Thorntons in railway timetables and advertising. In the years between the First and Second World Wars, Thornton Dale was often voted prettiest village in Yorkshire and the -le- was added purely as a marketing tactic.

The small, fenced area (also part of 'The Square') to the left is grassed, has chestnut trees growing, an ancient cross, a set of stocks and benches. Partly obscured by the red van and red car are the 441485.

The stream to the right is one of the water courses for Thornton Beck. Behind the viewpoint on the right is 'The Forge' - housing a tea room, bakery and chocolate shop.
