Of the states 351,153 men in the army and navy morethan 46 per cent entered by enlistment. Illinois regis-tered 1,572,747 men under the selective draft and ofthese 188,010 were inducted into the service. More than5,000 men gave their lives for their country, and outof the seventy-eight officers and men awarded the Con-gressional Medal of Honor seven were residents of Illi-nois, while 350 officers and men from this state receivedthe Distinguished Service Cross.
