48 JOHN LEWIS CHILDS, FLORAL PARK, N. V. What we say about our Flower Seeds on pageif may be said about our Vegetable Seeds. We grow and offer but a limited number of varieties, only those which possess the greatest value for the home garden and the markets. These varieties are also special stock, cultivated, selected and improved until they have reached the highest mark of perfection which it is possible to attain. Beets and Turnips, round, smooth, uniform, tender; Cabbage, large, solid, crisp, sure-heading and long- keeping; Tomatoes, large, smooth, uniform, perfect in color, shape and quality; Lettuce, crisp, beautiful and delicious; Corn, rich, sugary, tender and perfect; Melons, of high flavor, quick and robust growth, per- fect and luscious; Onions, uniform in size, perfect in shape, delicate in taste; Squashes, early and late of high quality; Radishes, crisp, mild, perfect in shape and color, and of quick growth. These are all points which we have brought to perfection in our prize strains of Garden Vegetables. Our thousands of customers in every nook and corner of the country know this, and to them we refer those who have never used out Seeds. They can be found everywhere, for we supply half a million planters direct, which is more than the combined output of any other two houses in the world, and is in itself the best possible endorsement of the high quality of our Seeds.

GIANT E.MPEEOK. c&sparagas, One of the most delicious of all vegetables, and the ear- liest to be taken from the garden. A bed once well planted is good almost for a lifetime with little or no care. Giant Emperor — In favored localties this gives good crop the second year from seed. Stalks grow to weigh at the rate of 3 to 4 stalks to a pound. We never ate liner Asparagus than that cut from a neighbor's patch in April, just eleven months from the time seed was sown, and by the way, seed should be sown where plants are to grow permanently, to avoid the check of transplanting. Seed, ioc. per pkt.; 3 pkts., for 25c : oz., 60c Boots, 50c per doz.: $2.00 per 100; $18-00 per 1000. Barr's Mammoth-Differs but little from Palmetto and is the best standard sort for either market or the home garden. Seed, pkt., 5c; oz.,10c; lb., 75c Strong roots, $1.00 per 100; $5.1/0 per 1000. ^rtictjoke.— (Globe,) This is cultivated for its unopened flower-buds, which are cooked like Asparagus. On established plants, these buds are borne constantly when tender succulent vegetables are Bcarcc Hardy perennial, easily grown in any good garden soil, and lasts for many years. Sow seed in drills and trans- plant the next spring into permanent beds. Protect by light litter tl e first winter. Pkt., 10c.; oz.. 30c. Brussels Spr°uts. Next to the Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts are the most delicious of all the Cabbage family. Defiance—A finely bred, large and tender strain of this de- licious vegetable. Stems tall and covered with tender little heads or "sprouts" from the top to bottom. Quality very fine when cooked and served like Cabbage. This splendid vegetable should be more generally grown. All who have tried it prefer it to Cabbage. It is easily grown and those who try it always grow it. Pkt., ioc; oz., 50c Matchless -A variety of vigorous growth and fine, solid sprouts of the very best quality. An extra fine sort which is highly prized in Europe. Pkt-, 5c; oz-, 15c; lb., $1.50.
