Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Christ Church, Melplash. Built in 1845-6 in neo-Norman style by Benjamin Ferrey, a pupil of Augustus Pugin. It was based on the design of the Norman Church of St Mary de Haura, Shoreham-by-Sea (see 641414). Construction was paid for by James Bandinel, who was for a time secretary to William Wilberforce, in memory of his father Dr. Bandinel, vicar of Netherbury and Beaminster. Consecration was on 20 October 1846. It is Grade II* listed. The large size of the church was in anticipation of an increase in the population in the village to support the local flax industry used for rope making in nearby Bridport. Unfortunately, far from an increase in population, a decline in the flax trade in the 1850s led to a 10% reduction of the population in the area.
