I am well pleasedwith the methods, and the way the boys takehold of the study. In New York City there is a saloon forevery 121 inhabitants, and a church for every2,400. The seating capacity of the churcheswill not average 800. The saloons wouldeasily accommodate every man, woman andchild in the city, but if they should flee forrefuge to the churches only one third couldenter and two-thirds of them, or about 1,000,-000, would be left out in the cold. Daniel Baker was once making a vigorousappeal in behalf of missions in Texas. Oneman said: Well, I will give five dollars; Ican give this amount and not feel it. Dr.Baker replied: Suppose my brother, yougive twenty and feel it. Your Saviour feltwhat he did for you. When dying hesaid: William, my son, if I should die Iwant this epitaph carved on my tomb.4 Here lies Daniel Baker—preacher of the gospel—a sinner saved by grace. Remem-ber, he added, a sinner saved by grace.11 He was a man of one book—the Bible;one idea—the salvation of souls, and oneoccupation—the proclamation of the gospel. Dr. Baker was a child of Christian parents,born August 17, 1791, in Midway, Ga. Daniel 104 REV. DANIEL BAKER, D. D. (February,. was the fourth son—the seventh child—andwas early left an orphan.
