There are other colored churches in town.Some of them have been many years building.Ours is the only one completed. —Where our Negro schools are located inhealthful and intelligent communities, race fric-tion is the least encountered. It must not bethought that the Negro has no friends to educa-tion among the white people of the South. Thefact is, the white people of the South who areable, have an educational problem of their ownto solve, which is as momentous as the Negroeducation is to the missionary societies of theNorth.—Professor T. 8. Inoorden. —The colored people of our land need to daymoral training and education. The need is tobe met by the Church and the school. Whenthese institutions have done their work in full,there will be no need of money or any otherthing that will make a well-rounded man. TheChurch and the school must train and disciplinemen, in order that they may be able to stand theconflict of life.— Rev. J. E. Moorland in theAmerican Missionary.

THE CHOICE OF A PROFESSION.At the time of the great anti-slavery agita-tion in New England, and when WendellPhillips was at the height of his fame as anorator, a meeting was held one evening inthe town of Concord, Mass., at which a re-cent speech of his was under review. It sohappened that Mr. Phillips himself came toConcord just at that time and went to themeeting to learn what was going on. He lis-tened of course with peculiar interest when he found what was the subject under discus-sion. The speaker was evidently one whodid not have any sympathy with the anti-slavery cause. He was particularly earnestin warning the young men present to avoidbeing carried away by the exciting oratoryrecently heard. At the close of this addressMr. Phillips asked permission to speak. Hemade a very effective reply and then turnedto the young men: Young gentlemen, youhave just been warned to avoid exciting 57 58 THE CHOICE OP A PROFE
