Description |
500px provided description: 200 years ago, in 1816, the until 1803 independently ruled prince-bishopric of Salzburg became part of Austria. During the 17th and 18th century, the Prince Archbishops used the wealth from the salt trade to transform Salzburg into one of the world?s most outstanding baroque city with magnificent palaces, churches and gardens. After 1803 the Prince Archbishops lose their secular power in the course of the Napoleonic wars, and Salzburg becomes part of different provinces before it is finally finding its way into the Austrian Empire. Following the decisions of the Congress of Vienna, on May 1st, 1816, Salzburg became with the borders valid today finally a part of Austria.
