Summary
[edit]DescriptionClarence Flour Mills, Hull - geograph.org.uk - 857313.jpg |
English: Clarence Flour Mills, Hull Looking east across the River Hull from the western end of Drypool Bridge. Clarence Flour Mills were built for Rank Ltd in 1952 around the grain silo of an older flour mill, much of which was destroyed by bombing in World War II. Rank became Rank Hovis McDougall (RHM) in 1962.
The original mill was built for Joseph Rank by city architect and fellow methodist Alfred Gelder in 1891. The lighter coloured brickwork with the writing on it is what remains of the original silo. Joseph Rank and Alfred Gelder lived as close neighbours at 365-371 Holderness Road https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/533939 and Joseph's son Joseph Arthur was born there in December 1888 (J. Arthur grew up to become a world-renowned film producer and distributor and founder of the Rank Organisation). The windmill which was the site of the original family business still stands on Holderness Road opposite East Park. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/214461 The huge brick buildings at Clarence Flour Mills have been disused for a few years now and may soon be pulled down or possibly remodelled as the east bank of the River Hull is scheduled for redevelopment. Workmen have already begun dismantling pipes and other metalwork sticking out over the path along the wharf. |
