Title
English: Cockerellites liops Mass Mortality
Publisher
English: U.S. National Park Service
Description
English:

Four of the same dark brown fossil fish on a tan stone. There is one fish facing left near the top, one facing right near the middle, and one facing right near the bottom with another one facing down and partially on top of this one.

For number, variety, and detail of fossil fish, few places equal ancient Fossil Lake of the Green River Formation. Mass mortalities such as this one are uncommon. These multiple deaths may have been caused by toxic algae superblooms, or sudden changes in water salinity or temperature. Catalog number FOBU428.
