BARBANQUILLA (bar-an-kela), theprincipal port of the Republic of Co-lombia and capital of the department ofAtlantico, lies near the left bank of themain channel of the Magdalena, 15 milesdistant from the sea. A railway runsto the coast; and the bar at the mouthof the river has been improved so as toenable sea-going vessels to pass up toBarranquilla, which possesses excellentwharfage accommodation.
