II. Ground and Tree Squirrels California ground squirrels have long been important harmful rodents in California; they destroy crops, damage irrigation structures, and carry disease. The commonest ground squirrels in this state are the large, long-tailed "dig- ger," or California ground squirrels (Citellus beecheyi and its subspecies; fig. 1) that inhabit most of the state except the desert portions; the smaller, short-tailed Oregon ground squirrel (Citellus oreganus; fig. 7) that lives in the northeastern plateau counties; and the golden-mantled ground squirrel
