Handwritten copy of letter; not William Lloyd Garrison's handwriting. Whereabouts of original manuscript unknown
William Lloyd Garrison received a "kind and generous letter from Nathaniel Barney." It was fortunate for William L. Garrison that Samuel Joseph May took out an accident policy from the Travelers Insurance Company, who paid him "the stipulated sum for twenty-six weeks of total disability--amounting to $390." The cost of living has increased. He doesn't yet know what he is going to do for a living. He does not feel inclined to write the history of the anti-slavery movement. He asks Samuel May, Jr. to bring with him "such poetical selections as you may have conveniently at hand, as I am now gathering materials for the volume which I have so long designed to compile, relating to the cause of humanity, freedom and progress."
