THE OLD DOG. HERE was once a man who had a dog.While the dog was young he wasmade much of, but when he grew oldhe was driven out of doors. So hewent and lay outside the fence, anda wolf came up to him and said : Doggy, whyso down in the mouth %— While I was young,said the dog, they made much of me ; but nowthat I am old they beat me. The wolf said: Isee thy master in the field; go after him, andperchance hell give thee something.— Nay, saidthe dog, they wont even let me walk about thefields now, they only beat me.— Look now, saidthe wolf, Im sorry, and will make things betterfor thee. Thy mistress, I see, has put her childdown beneath that wagon. Ill seize it, and makeoff with it. Run thou after me and bark, andthough thou hast no teeth left, touzle me as much asthou canst, so that thy mistress may see it,

Gabriel, Gabriel!dont you see ? The wolf has got the child ! Thenthe man chased the wolf, and got back the child. Brave old dog ! said he ; you are old and toothless,and yet you can give help in time of need, and willnot let your masters child be stolen. And hence-forth the woman and her husband gave the old dog alarge lump of bread every day. THE FOX AND THE CAT.
