[edit]DescriptionCottesmore Quarries Railway, bridge parapet - geograph.org.uk - 1465187.jpg |
English: Cottesmore Quarries Railway: bridge parapet At one time, much of this square was quarried for ironstone. Cottesmore East Quarry, east of the Cottesmore to Market Overton Road, opened in 1955. The narrow-gauge railway tunnelled under the road and turned sharp left; the quarry was a narrow strip parallel to the road as far as Barrow. The ore was of disappointing quality, however, and East Quarry was abandoned after only two years. Like the quarry the bridge is filled in, its concrete parapet the only reminder that for two years, half a century ago, there was a busy little railway here. The OS Map shows the "lorry road" leading to the tipping dock at Cottesmore Sidings (now Rutland Railway Museum), built when the railway was abandoned and lorries carried the last few loads from East Quarry. |
