Summary
[edit]DescriptionCourt Hey Park - geograph.org.uk - 597742.jpg |
English: Court Hey Park Court Hey Park was formerly part of Lord Derby's Estate. In 1836 the grounds were acquired by Robertson Gladstone (1805-1875) elder brother of British Prime Minister William Gladstone who built the mansion house, Court Hey Hall, in a sixty acre walled estate.
Some original sandstone railway sleepers from the nearby Liverpool-Manchester Railway (made famous by George Stephenson's locomotive 'The Rocket') were used to edge the main drive to the hall and remain to this day. The land was later sold to J. Bibby and Sons as an experimental farm and in 1956 the hall was demolished leaving the stables and walled garden. Vernon's Pools made their home here for the latter part of the 20th century prior to the stables and some of the land being taken over for the National Wildflower Centre in 2000.
