Summary[edit]
DescriptionCowley, Clisby's Bridge and a Coal and Wine Tax Post - geograph.org.uk - 942859.jpg |
English: Cowley: Clisby's Bridge and a Coal and Wine Tax Post Clisby's Bridge takes the B470 Iver Lane over the River Colne.
Sadly neglected but behind the railing and lurking in the undergrowth to the right is a Coal and Wine Tax Post. These posts were a means of marking the point at which duty became payable on coal and wine being transported into the City of London. The coat of arms depicted is that of the City of London, with the shield bearing the Cross of St George and the Sword of St Paul, originally painted red on a white background. The text 4&25VICT CAP 42 refers to the Act of Parliament under which statute they were erected - in this instance the London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act of 1861. There is also another City of London plaque set into the right hand bridge parapet wall. For a view of the River Colne from the bridge please see 942384. The centre of the bridge at the brow of the hump also marks the boundary between Buckinghamshire on the far side and the London Borough of Hillingdon on this side. So, if the Geograph site supported tags these could be some that could be attached: B road, bridge, boundary, and Coal Tax Post. |
