The following extract is taken from the book 'The Way We Were: Historic Armagh Photographs from the Allison Collection' by Desmond Fitzgerald and Roger Weatherup
Wartime Wedding, 1943

Maureen Donnelly of Railway Street became the first G.I. bride in Armagh on 3rd July 1943. She met Private Artie Mudge in the Hibernian Hall at a Sunday night dance and he proposed two months later. Artie had joined the United States Army when he was 18 years old and was posted to Northern Ireland in 1943. The honeymoon (two nights) was spent in the Beresford Arms Hotel before Artie returned to Chester in preparation for the D-Day landings. He was given ten days leave while serving in France and posted back to the U.S.A. in June 1945. Maureen was not able to join him until May 1946. They are now living in New Jersey. The bridesmaid was Emma Loughran and the best man was that well-known Armagh character, Petey Collins.
