| Description |
English: Cricket Ground and Cycle Track, Preston Park Laid out in 1887 on a former polo field with a racing cycle track around the edge. The latter was originally cinder and was shared with athletes until they moved out to the new purpose built Withdean stadium in 1954. The cycle track was then tarmaced and proved a popular spectator sport through the 1940s and 50s with crowds of up to 10,000 paying to watch the racing which could be fast and furious and involve many crashes. The grandstand on the left was built in 1930 whilst the clubhouse and changing rooms are on the right. Racing dwindled in the 1970s but has grown again and the cycle track is still used today. |
