BOUGUEREATJ 100—CROSSING THE STREAM ■ -\i\) A barefooted peasant maiden is carrying hercurly-haired baby brother pick-a-back through theforest, and has just crossed a shallow streamwhich trickles over a rocky bed. The child wearsbut a single garment and the maiden is dressed ina long-sleeved white chemise, a deep wine-coloredbodice, and a blue petticoat from which is turnedback a purple apron. Her sole ornament is astring of corals around the neck. To the left andbehind the figures, which are life-sized, is a vistaalong the woodland path, with here and there aflicker of light and a glimpse of the sky beyond;to the right, distant sturdy tree-trunks arebrought into prominence by a passage of light inthe extreme distance. HEBERT 101—LA VOIX CELESTE )\° The figure of a maiden, rather more than halflife-sized, seated on a jutting spur of a ledge ofrock, is in relief against a sunset sky and a deso-late, treeless landscape, through which flows abroad, quiet river reflecting the glow of early twi-light. She is dressed in a crimson, gold-embroid-ered brocade tunic, with a diaphanous blue man-tle draped across her knees. Her right handtouches the strings of a small harp and her leftrests lightly on a scroll which bears a Latin text.Her eyes are turned heavenward, as if she hearda voice in response to the chord she strikes. Signed at the left, Hebert, 1882. Height, 52y2 inches; width, 3OV2 inches. George I. Seney Collection, 1885.
