Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Culmore old school, Omagh. Mr Eugene Floyd, a local historian showed me where this stone which marked George Conway's grave in Omagh Jail, is placed upside-down in the boundary wall. It is at the front of the building with the letters G.C. 1880 standing for George Conway, who was the last man to be hung in Omagh Goal. Hundreds of people pass by this every day, few of them aware of this mute reminder of the gallows within Omagh goal. The Governor's Residence is still there and inhabited, although it is in poor shape - see 51606. The umbrella points to the bottom left hand corner of the stone which is irregular in shape. It is a couple of courses below the coping, see close-up 1531802.
