Notes
  • Significance: Constructed in 1908 as the Locomotive Shed, Building No. 51 served in a support role for the Pensacola Navy Yard until the yard's closure in 1911 and for NAS Pensacola from 1914 until present time. The original architectural plans were developed by the Navy's Bureau of Yards and Docks (BuDocks). The contractor is unknown. The Pensacola Navy Yard experienced a relative increase in construction activity in the twelve years between the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the closure of the yard in 1911. Officials at the Pensacola Navy Yard had slowly pieced together a rail system over a period of several decades to more efficiently transport heavy equipment, coal, and watercraft along the station's sandy shores. By 1907, the yard featured two miles of tracks, two locomotives, and other rail-based equipment requiring maintenance and protection from the elements. Allocations for the Locomotive Shed in 1907 resulted in a structure that could house and repair two locomotives simultaneously. The building served in a transportation support role until the late 1950s. From the mid-1970s on, the building served as the Fire Extinguisher Repair and Storage facility. The utilitarian one-story, rectangular-plan, load-bearing masonry building features a shallow, gabled roof with decorative brick detailing at the east and west parapets and along the cornice, and cast-iron lintels over windows and door openings. Alterations include the replacement of the original rolling doors on the east facade, and the filling in of the door openings on the west, probably after 1926. Original wood-sash windows have been replaced with narrow, metal windows in sets of three in each of the four openings on the north and south facades. A small concrete-block, shed-roof enclosure was added prior to 1967. Interior alterations include the installation of a mezzanine level in the west half of the building sometime during the 1980s and 1990s. Despite the alterations, Building No. 51 remains compatible in form, massing, fenestration pattern, and scale to its original design. Building No. 51 is located in the southeastern section of NAS Pensacola, within the boundaries of the Pensacola Naval Air Station Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The National Park Service designated this district as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1976. Building No. 51 remains a contributing element in the historic district.
