  • Significance: Building 32, one of the initial buildings at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, is significant because of the association of the shipyard with the development of the U.S. Navy into a major military power. The establishment of the shipyard occurred at a time when the navy initiated a period of conscious evolution into a powerful military force. The Charleston Naval Shipyard was built to accommodate the need for more ship repair facilities and to add to the navy's capacity to construct its expanding fleet of steel warships. Though Building 32 is one of the original buildings at the shipyard, its period of significance extends beyond the initial years of the shipyard. The building has functioned as an integral part of the industrial shipyard throughout the twentieth century, and remains active today. ...
