Notes
  • Significance: Constructed in 1940 as the laundry, Building No. 636 served in a supportive role to Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola's mission to train large numbers of Navy pilots during World War II. One of few installation buildings not constructed with Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Public Works Administration (PWA) funding and labor between 1936 and 1940, Building No. 636 was designed by W.F. Jackson Company, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia, and built by the Hardaway Contracting Company of Columbus, Georgia. The construction of Building No. 636 was part of an ambitious building program that took place at NAS Pensacola during the late 1930s and early 1940s. The building's red brick exterior, cast stone trim, and corner quoins complement contemporaneous Georgian Revival training and dormitory facilities, constructed just west of the old navy yard. The most notable modification, a small addition, was constructed in 1942. Building No. 636 continued as a laundry facility through World War II and much of the Cold War. The laundry building was eventually converted for use as a warehouse and storage building in the 1980s and now sits unoccupied. The building retains its original windows and many of its original doors. With only minor alterations to its exterior, Building No. 636 remains compatible in form, scale, and materials to its original design. Building No. 636 is located in the southeastern portion of NAS Pensacola, within the boundaries of the Pensacola Naval Air Station Historic District. The historic district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and designated as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1976. The historic district's period of significance is not clearly defined, but the nomination text only discusses buildings constructed prior to 1919; therefore, Building No. 636 was not mentioned in the nomination, due to its 1940 construction date.
