Summary

[edit]
Description
English: /DH No. 1 at York Road
Built in 1969 by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, the three diesel-hydraulic 1 class 0.6.0s entered service with Northern Ireland Railways between July and October 1969. They were not successful and spend most of their service in works awaiting increasingly unavailable spare parts. Although they had not worked for some time, all were officially withdrawn in 1989 and initially preserved by the Irish Traction Group. No's 2 & 3 were later rebuilt and sold for industrial use in Sri Lanka, while No. 1 is retained by ITG. Although only 14 months old when seen shunting some UTA wagons at York Road station, No. 1 already shows signs of use. Given the significant changes to this area in the intervening years, location of both locomotive and photographer are approximate.
