Text Appearing Before Image:
thatthe angel as well as all the other figures so intro-duced except the Virgin are carved alike before andbehind, with two faces and no backs. Sloping headsof flamboyant tracery unite the back panelling tothe canopies, which are composed of fluted semidomesand florid ogee canopies resembling those in theduomo at Zara^ There are two coats of arms carvedon the stalls, of which that below the figure of theangel belongs to the family Nimira, to whoseliberality the duomo owes much. There are two j)ictures in the duomo that shouldbe noticed. The first is a much injured altar-pieceof the fourteenth century, divided into compartmentswhich are now all misplaced. Under a cusped archin the centre is our Lord on the cross, to the lefts. His left hand isstretched out towards his mothers face, and he leansoutwards with the other arm extended in the atti-tude of blessing. The chair has a pointed back, andsides of the same height as the back coming forw^ardat an angle. The drawing is influenced by Byzan-tine tradition, and the eyes are long and almond-shaped, but the style is that of the earlier Italianschools of Cimabue and Giotto rather than of theunprogTessive art of Eastern Europe. This in-teresting and valuable picture deserves a betterfate than to be disguised wdth the tinsel trum-pery of the devout Arbesani, which is hung thicklyall over it. The west front of the duomo has been r
