ities, Emory and Oglethorpe.Emory was founded in 1914, as the result of a feudwhich developed in Vanderbilt University, located atNashville, Tennessee, over the question as to whetherthe institution should be controlled by the Board ofBishops of the southern Methodist Episcopal Church, orby the University trustees, who were not so much inter-ested in the development of the sectarian side of the uni-versity. The fight was taken to the courts where thetrustees won. As a result, Methodist influence and sup-port were withdrawn from Vanderbilt, which thence-forward became a non-sectarian college, and Emory wasstarted—Atlanta having been selected as its home be-cause nearly a million and a half dollars was raised inAtlanta to bring it there. Oglethorpe is to be a Presbyterian institution, andstarts off with a million dollars. This will give Atlanta three rather important col-leges, since she already has the technical liranch of theUniversity of Georgia, the main establishment of which 384

It was founded in 1794- TheUniversity of Pennsylvania, dating from 1740, is theoldest of all state universities. Harvard, founded in1636, was the first college established in the country;and the only other American colleges which survivefrom the seventeenth century are William and Mary, atWilliamsburg, Virginia, established in 1693, and St.Johns College, at Annapolis, dating from 1696.) There is a tendency in some parts of the South to usethe terms college and university loosely. Someschools for white persons, doing little if anything morethan grammar and high-school work, are called col-leges, and negro institutions doing similar work aresometimes grandiloquently termed universities.
