DescriptionDarjeeling QE2 52.jpg |
English: THE "CHOWRASTA," DARJEELING. The scene which is here depicted is a Children's Floral Fete at Darjeeling, The children are assembling on the Chowrasta - or " Four Roads "—before proceeding to the "Shrubbery." The junction of Ihe" Calcutta and Auckland Roads" with the two " Malls" gives its name to the Chowrasta. which is the fashionable place of assembly for residents and visitors in the charming mountain station of Darjeeling; Darjeeling, which is now connected with the plains by a narrow Range railway, is not only a health resort for those who have become exhausted or enfeebled by work in the burning offices of Calcutta, but is the centre of the flourishing district in which the famous Darjeeling teas are grown. Among the throng seen in the picture are British soldiers in their sun helmets, and a couple of Gurkka soldiers recruited in the neighbouring State of Nepaul. |
