To complete the conquestit was necessary to move upon the capital, a workwhich was intrusted to General Winfield Scott, the com-mander-in-chief of the armies of the United States. On the 6th of March, 1847, tne army destined for theadvance to the city of Mexico was concentrated near VeraCruz. It comprised the then standing army of theUnited States—four regiments of artillery, eight of in-fantry, one of mounted riflemen, and detachments ofdragoons, besides eight volunteer regiments of infantryand one of cavalry. General Scott commanded in person,with Generals Worth, Twiggs, and Patterson as his briga-diers. Under the last named were Generals Quitman,Pillow, and Shields, who were destined to make theirnames known before the end of the campaign. The firststep in advancing upon the city of Mexico was to captureVera Cruz, which was defended by the fortress of SanJuan dUloa, a fortress built on a reef in front of the city

The fortresswas considered by the Mexicans to be impregnable ; itmounted one hundred and twenty-eight guns of variouscalibres, and its walls were regarded as proof against anyshot or shell the Americans could throw against it. Onthe land side the city was defended by walls mountingninety guns, and so sure were the Mexicans of theirability to resist attack, that they neglected to provisionthe fortress and city for a siege, and also neglected tosend away women, children, and other non-combatants.The American troops landed without opposition aboutthree miles from the city and out of range of the guns,and immediately prepared for the siege. By the eveningof the 12th of March the place was completely investedby the troops, and the work of landing the siege artillerywas pushed as rapidly as possible. By the 22d every thing was ready, and then GeneralScott sent a summons to General Morales, the command-er of the Mexic
