Characteristic of thestyle of the Italian Renaissance but even more of those of the LouisXVI and Empire periods are diaper patterns with tiny repeats, thevery minuteness of which prevents the monotony from being irksomeor offensive. By the middle of the nineteenth century the development ofroller printing was producing in chintzes and wall papers the samediminution of motifs that the jacquard attachment was producing indamasks and brocades. Also, the cheaper methods of making paperand the poverty of the world caused by the Napoleonic wars favouredwall papers as compared with chintzes. Most significant of all, theblind and stupid adoration and imitation of ancient Classic had causedartists to neglect decorative art in their yearnings after the supposedlymiraculous mysteries of representative art.
