will not sarve for a windo it will sarvefor a fote carpet. While it is possible, even probable, that pile carpets may havebeen made in England in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, wehave no positive evidence to prove it. The carpet belonging to LordVerulam that bears in the centre a large medallion with the royalarms of England, the letters E R (Elizabeth Regina), and the date1570, may have been made at Norwich by weavers from Spain or withSpanish training; but it is equally probable that it was woven inSpain on order from England. It bears the arms of the borough ofIpswich and of the family of Harbottle. Equally Spanish in style is the carpet in the Victoria and AlbertMuseum with the inscription: Feare God and Keep His Command-ments, made in the yeare 1603. It bears the arms of Sir EdwardApsley and his wife Elizabeth Elmes and may also have been madein England. It resembles closely the carpet that appears in thepainting by Marc Gheeraedts, in the National Portrait Gallery of 145

ENGLISH EIGHTEENTH CENTURY Towards the end of the seventeenth century we begin to getdefinite evidence of carpet weaving in England. In 1701, KingWilliam granted a charter to immigrants from France settled atWilton, to manufacture carpets after the French style (savonnerie),and the charter was confirmed in 1706 and 1725. The special patronof the industry was the ninth Earl of Pembroke, who persuaded manyof the skilled French and Flemish weavers to come to England. A few years later, in 1751, Pere Norbert, who naturalised him-self as an Englishman and changed his name to Peter Parisot, starteda factory and school at Fulham. In 1753 he published An accountof the new manufactory of tapestry after the manner of that at theGobelins, and of carpets after the manner of that at Chaillot(savonnerie) now undertake
