trepresents the departure of a regiment for the field; anothers3aiibolizes a naval engagement; the third has for its subject thelabors of the Sanitary Commission; and the fourth shows thereturn of the regiments at the close of the conflict. Upon the plinth rests the pedestal proper, fourteen feet threeinches in height, terminating in a cornice, or surbase. The foursides of the die are panelled. In that fiicing the South is cut inbold letters, illuminated with gold leaf, the following inscription,furnished by President Charles W. Eliot, of Harvard College : — TO THE MEN OF BOSTON WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY ON LAND AND SEA IN THE WAR WHICH KEPT THE UNION WHOLE DESTROYED SLAVERY AND MAINTAINED THE CONSTITUTION THE GRATEFUL CITY HAS BUILT THIS MONUMENT THAT THEIR EXAMPLE MAY SPEAK TO COMING GENERATIONS From the surbase of the pedestal rises the column, which is ofthe Roman-Doric order, and ornate in character. THE AKMT AXD NAVY MONUMENT. 45 about its base, representing the four sections of the Union, —North, South, East, and West. They are eight feet in height,and, as is customary in the representation of allegorical figures,they are robed in classic drapery, which is skilfully and grace-fully disposed. The lower section of the shaft rises eight feet and six inches,ending with the first band, a beautifully sculptured wreath.Above this is the second section, or fluted i^art of the column,seven feet in height. Two plain sections of the shaft follow, thefirst six feet five inches, and the second six feet ten inches inheight, separated by wreath-bands, terminating with a band bear-ing the emblematic stars, and sarmounted b)^ a capital, of gracefuland striking design, seven feet square and elaborately carved.Above each side is sculptured an eagle with outspread iviugs inwhite marble.
