Some time later he was dressing the wound ofMajor Ellis, of the Thirteenth, when a shell burst above them; the fragmentswhizzed all around and between them, tearing the bandage out of Quinns handand wounding Ellis a second time. But the sergeant was not hurt. For his bravery at San Juan he was afterwards awarded the Medal of Honor. The center of the attacking line was farther away from the enemy than thecavalry, and not so fortunate. The Third Brigade of General Kents division lostits commander, the gallant Colonel Wickoff, who was instantly killed by a bulletwhile exposing himself in establishing a line. The command devolved upon Lieu-tenant-Colonel Worth, of the Thirteenth Infantry, who soon fell also, severely
