Whilethe enemy were preparing a counter-attack,which they preceded by a terrific barrage, Gen.Nolan made his way into the town of Apre-mont and personally directed the movementsof his tanks under a most harassing fire ofenemy machine-guns, rifles, and artillery.His indomitable courage and coolness so in-spired his forces that about 400 of our troopsrepulsed an enemy attack of two Germanregiments. MIECZYSLAW BROCKI, Corporal, Company B, 16th Infantry, 1st Division.For extraordinary heroism in action south of SoissonsJuly 21, 1918, Brocki was awarded the DistinguishedService Cross. On this date German machine-gunswere causing very heavy losses to Company B, andBrocki, on his own initiative, dashed forward withtwo companions through the heavy fire of the enemy,and captured two German machine-guns. This wasonly one incident of Corporal Brockis exceptionalactivities during the operations from July 18 to 22. (187)
