"Thursday four days out Boy this hole is hot and they are making us stay down here for class. What an outfit. Our three destroyers left us today for about six hours. There must of been land near by. We are still heading south toward Panama. We are heading for someplace in the South Pacific. Slept on deck. Friday five days out Still going strong this ship never slows down. Classes again today. Got 3 days of mess duty today. Heading West now to Panama. Saw land today. Some island of the West Indies." From the James P. O'Connell Collection (COLL/5387), Marine Corps Archives & Special Collections. OFFICIAL USMC PHOTOGRAPH |
