He at one timeimpoverished himself by speculation, but by appli-cation to his art he finally retrieved his losses. Hedied in 1705. VAN DER SLUIJS, Jakob, was born at Ley-den in 1660, and brought up in the Orphanage.Evincing some taste for art, he was placed underAry de Vois, whom he left to become a disciple ofPeter van Slingelandt. He imitated the polishedstyle of the latter, but with a less laborious finish,and his small pictures of conversations, domesticsubjects, and fashionable assemblies met with con-siderable success. They are chiefly confined toLeyden, where he constantly resided, and where hedied in 1736. There are four pictures by him inthe Leyden Museum.
