Diseases of the Spleen The spleen is enlarged in a number of conditions, themost frequent of which are malaria, typhoid, rickets,syphilis, and tuberculosis. It is also seen in simple anemia accompanied bymoderate leukocytosis, in Bantis disease, in von Jakschsdisease, ui leukemia, and Hodgkins disease. In the lasttwo the liver is also enlarged. It may accompany any of the acute infectious diseases;it is seen in amyloid degenerations; and in cardiac condi-tions m. which there is obstruction to the venous circula-tion. The spleen has been removed in cases of perniciousanemia with very good results. CHAPTER IXNERVOUS DISEASES ANATOMY OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM The central nervous system is composed of the brain,the spinal cord, and their coverings. The brain is contained ^vithin the cavity of the skull.It is the center of thought, of the perception of the fivesenses, and of the voluntary motor activities of the body.
