some frothing at the mouth. Otherwise the general condition was good.The temperature was 98° F.; respiration, 80, and pulse, 120. On October 21st, the ventricles were again irrigated with 40 cubic centimetersof normal saline solution, and 20 cubic centimeters of serum w^ere injected. October 24th, the childs general condition was very poor. Opisthotonos wasmarked. The body rigidly bent in the form of a bow. The arms were rigidlyextended and the palms everted outward. October 25th, and during the following week, daily injections of 30-50 cubiccentimeters of serum were injected either into the ventricles or, on two days, intothe spinal canal and lateral ventricles. The total amount of Flexner serum injectedwas 180 cubic centimeters; the total amount retained in the ventricles and spinalcanal was about 100 cubic centimeters.
