istered.Since then no treatment was taken. For several years a large ulcer existed on thethigh. Six weeks previous to the condition as seen inthe plate there was difficulty in swallowing. At thetime the patient entered the hospital she was muchrun down, and on the left thigh there were a deepgummatous ulcer, as large as the palms of two hands,and several small gummata. The soft palate on bothsides was perforated. The borders of the perfor-ations were ulcerated and ulcers also existed on theposterior wall of the pharynx. All of the ulcers hada dirty grayish covering. The Wassermann reactionwas positive. After an intramuscular, and intravenous injec-tion of salvarsan the throat ulcerations healed entirelywithin three weeks, while the gummata of the skindiminished greatly in size within six weeks. Thepatient gained 16 pounds. The plate shows the con-dition of the soft palate, etc., when the patient left thehospital. Speaking and swallowing were not inter-fered with. 148 Plate XX. Fig. 23

The floor of the ulceris covered with a markedly adherent white diphthe-roid necrotic membrane. The wall of the ulcer is pre-cij^itous. The surrounding mucous membrane, toa considerable distance from the ulcer, is actively con-gested, oedematous, and swollen. To the left of thelarge ulcer is a small one having a sharp border andtending to unite with the large one. The patient, awoman fifty-one years old, had eight to ten weekspreviously a chancre of the lower lip with a submaxil-lary adenitis. At the time when the idceration of thefauces occurred there were no skin manifestations, butthere was a periosteal gumma of the right tibia. TheWasserviann reaction was positive.
