mmissural zones, Flechsigscentrum ovale, Gombault and Phillippes triangle in the lumbosacralregion; the cornucommissural zones, Schultzes comma tract and thefascicles of Hoche. (See Plate X.) As a result of the disappearance of the fibers a secondary neurogliainfiltration takes place. This consists of glia with fine prolongations, and also spider cells. In the cases of taboparesis one finds lympho-cytes and plasma cells within the cord substance. With a limited 572 SYPHILIS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM tabetic process they are not usually encountered.^ Many ganglioncells of the posterior horns show degenerative changes. They arediminished in size, there is definite chromatophilia, or vacuolization, and other signs of degeneration. The cells of the column of Clarkare diseased only to a slight extent. In tabes with cranial nerve signs the degeneration can be traced inthe medulla and pons with secondary atrophy of the sensory nuclei.Atrophy of the optic nerve is not infrequent. Diira AnteriorRoot

Jendrassik, Schaffer, Epstein and Krauss have also shown thatthe brain cortex is not uninvolved even in typical tabes. There isa diminution in the nerve fibers, and alterations in the vessels and pia—there may be lymphocyte and plasma-cell infiltration even in theabsence of pronounced mental symptoms. Cerebellar degenerationsare also known. The anterior horn cells do not always escape. Inthe patients with pronounced atrophy many motor cells of the anteriorhorns are found degenerated. Similar changes are known where thereare bulbar, laryngeal or other cranial nerve palsies. The cerebrospinal Alzheimer, N. Arb., i, 14.
