Summary
[edit]DescriptionDoorway to the stables at Crichton Castle - geograph.org.uk - 1118519.jpg |
English: Doorway to the stables at Crichton Castle The stables are situated about 50 yards south of the castle and were built in the 1580's by the half mad Earl of Bothwell who was well described as a, "Cultured ruffian". With its large size, height and vaulted roof the stables give the appearance of a chapel, however, above the stables was a hayloft with accommodation for grooms. Directly above the doorway is a window shaped in the form of a horseshoe, with twin ribbon moulding and 'nails'.
The stables are reputed to be haunted but alas I don't know tale. Both the castle and stables are now in the care of Historic Scotland. |
