Summary[edit]

Description
English: Doulton Fountain Originally gifted to Glasgow for the International Exhibition of 1888 in Kelvingrove Park, the Doulton Fountain was the largest terracotta fountain in the world. The fountain features four groups of figures representing India, Canada, South Africa and Australia. Above these is a tier of three soldiers and a sailor representing Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales, and above these four female water-bearers clad in flowing gowns. On the top, symbolically surveying her dominions stands Queen Victoria bearing the orb and sceptre. When Glasgow Green's renewal was first mooted, a survey was commissioned to assess the extent of the repairs which would be required to restore the magnificent edifice to its former glory. Ibstock Hathernware was commissioned to restore and replace the statuary and moulded detail and Glasgow-based Hunter and Clark to undertake the huge task of dismantling the massive structure and rebuilding the fountain on its new site. Now the Doulton Fountain, superbly restored, sits as the centrepiece of a new civic space fronting the People's Palace.
