Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dumbuck Crannog - the remains of the platform [See the end note for a summary of the crannog; for more detail, see the main description: 932217.]

Near the centre of the photo is a wooden stump; another two stumps are visible to its left and right. The three stumps are part of a larger circle of over twenty, and are the remains of a ring of timber piles (oak) that supported a platform here. However, in the foreground of the photo, the remains of the platform itself can be seen: though covered in sand, it is clear that there are timbers laid horizontally here, since their shape shows through the sand.

The 1898 excavation revealed that the platform was made of layers of roundwood, laid both tangentially and radially. An excavation in 2000 revealed the method of construction: branches were placed in a radiating pattern on top of foundation beams.

(Bearing in mind that the timbers are about 2000 years old, and that the entire site is submerged for much of the time, they are likely to be delicate; it is probably better, for the long-term preservation of the site, not to step on the places where these beams are evident; it is easy enough to move around the site to take a look at it without standing on the beams.)
