PORT HUENEME, Calif. - Winners of the Powerful Engagement and Learning In Naval Engineering and Science (PIPELINES), Design Challenge Awards, were announced August 12, at the Bard Mansion on Naval Base Ventura County. PIPELINES, a collaboration between Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (EXWC) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program. (left to right) UCSB Center for Science and Engineering Partnerships Program Director Mariateresa Napoli, EXWC intern Kevin Hurtado, EXWC intern Corey Stein, EXWC Technical Director and event moderator, Kail Macias. Hurtado and Stein shared first place for their project to research issues with the current ingress/egress system of the Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo (LARC) vehicle and develop a new ladder system. Five student teams spent their eight weeks of summer with EXWC and UCSB mentors working on five engineering Design Challenges. The teams of 3-4 students enrolled in UCSB and local community colleges were assigned a project and given freedom to develop unique solutions for real-world situations.
