for a transcontinental railroad, had made treaties with30,000 Indians, had extinguished Indian titles to many thous-ands of acres of Washington land, established peace amonghereditary enemies over a larger area than Xew England andthe ^Middle States, and by waging an aggressive warfare againstthe savage foe had saved the settlements from extinction. Inaddition to this Stevens took such a firm stand against Britishaggression at the time the controversy over possession of theSan Juan Islands arose that this valuable group was savedto the United States. At the end of the war he disbanded thevolunteers and adjusted financial claims to the satisfaction ofthe majority. Over three quarters of a million dollars weredisbursed for the government, all accounts for which werefound to be correct. In his career in Congress he secured the ratification of hisIndian treaties, payment of the Indian war debt, the openingof the interior to settlement and the punishment of Indianmurderers.
