Its average mileage is 1500and its cost per 1000 car-miles is 54 cents to 55 cents.This cost is based on a net price of 82 cents per wheel, asthere is 50 cents scrap value in wheels which cost $1.32when new. The standard contact shoe for elevated service has latelybeen redesigned, as per Fig. 9, to eliminate all links andcastings. The shoe is manufactured simply of wroughtiron forged in the companys shops. It is designed for amaximum height variation of 2^2 in. The former shoeconsisted of castings which were continually breaking. Itwas a link-suspended shoe with copper shunts, but in thenew type enough contact is secured through the flat springand the shoe pressure, without using shunts. Fig. 9 alsoshows the sleet brush. This is made of No. 23 B & S gagewire, which is renewed practically every season. S
