the siding would know that anothercar was approaching and would restore the switch toits normal position for the main line movement. Time-element relays are also used to control theswitch indicator at outlying switches. This prevents acar from entering the block from the siding just asanother car enters the block on the main line. Thistype of switch indicator does not require a separate linewire through the block, as it is connected in series withthe line wire which controls the line phase of the three-position line-relay when the switch is reversed. Thispermits the indicator relay to pick up, but causes theline relay to assume the de-energized position and thesignals to indicate danger. When the switch is normal, the local winding on the switch indicator is controlledby a wire from the stock and line relays at the near-bysignal location. Energy for the signal system is obtained from a2200-volt, 60-cycle, single-phase line from the TerreHaute power station for signals installed between

The 60-cycle system wasused for this installation instead of the 25-cycle currenton the previous installations on the T. H., I. & E. becauseof the fact that the generating station at Terre Haute isa 60-cycle station and it would have been necessaryto install motor-generator sets and additional trans-mission lines for 25-cycle signaling. The same trans-mission lines which supply the signals are also used forsupplying power to the communities along the rail-way. The wire used on this transmission line is No. 6B. & S. gage copper, covered with triple-braid weather-proof insulation. All the line transformers used arethe General Railway Signal Companys type L, oilcooled with 220-volt primaries. Transformers of 0.2-kva. capacity and a 14-vo
