duction motor is practically a constant-speed motor, the speed variation being less than aboutten per cent of the no-load value, and therefore causeslarge energy demands on the central station. On the otherhand, energy may be returned to the system when trainsoperated by them descend grades. This type of motoris adapted for heavy traction with infrequent stops. Twoor three separate trolleys are necessary for such oper-ation. Fig. 19 shows the motors and the method of theirmountings on the trucks on the locomotives used in the 40 TRACTION AND TRANSMISSION. Cascade tunnel of the Great Northern Railroad. Sixthousand six hundred volts are delivered to the locomotivesfrom two trolley wires and the track rails, and are steppeddown by transformers in the cab to 500 volts, which areimpressed upon the motor terminals. 16. Methods of Drive. — Traction motors may drivethe car wheels by means of gears, connecting rods, ordriving pins. The first method is universally employed :—-■.-■ ~ ■

The lattermethods of drive are used in high-speed locomotive service. In the Pennsylvania electric locomotives the motors aremounted upon the frame and side-connected to drivingwheels by a system of cranks and parallel connecting rods, TYPES AxND PERFORMANCE CURVES OF MOTORS. 41
