world is that which is used in connection withthe electrical zone of the New York terminus of the N. Y. C.& H. R. R. R. The complete installation, divided into eightgroups, is capable of delivering 22,000 amperes for onehour, which is sufficient to operate the whole system, undernormal conditions, for one hour in case of failure of thegenerating apparatus. 65. Arrangement of Apparatus. — The arrangement ofapparatus in a substation is governed to some extent bythe character of the equipment and the size and shape ofthe available site. It is desirable to have all apparatuson one floor; but, if the equipment be large, the switchgear should be placed on a gallery so that the attendantmay command a view of the whole station. In urbandistricts, where real estate is expensive, the transformers,high-tension switches, and lightning arresters are oftenplaced on a second floor. Storage batteries when usedin substations are usually located on another floor or 190 TRACTION AND TRANSMISSION.
