GENERAL CIRCULATION OF THE ATMOSPHERE. 71 Planetary or Permanent Winds. — There are certain windswhose force and direction depend upon the fact that there isa variation in the amount of heat received in different lati-tudes of the earth, and that the earth is rotating about itsaxis. These may be called planetary winds, because theywould be developed upon any planetary body where similarconditions prevail. Or we may call them permanent, because,compared with other winds, their direction and force are prac-tically permanent. In some places they are greatly modifiedby other causes; but they are so strongly developed that theirinfluence is felt all over the earth. They are, as it were,the general atmospheric winds; and together they form thefundamental circulation of the atmosphere. They may bedescribed under several headings.
