The spring in the case S holds the movablewing rail a b firmly against the adjoining part of the frogso that the main rail a c is practically unbroken. Whena train is passing from the turnout to the main track, thewheel flanges enter the heel of the frog at b and force thewing rail over, the spring not being stiff enough to pre-vent this action, but being stiff enough to force the wingrail back after the flanges have passed. In the samemanner the wing rail is forced over when a train entersthe turnout from the main track, the guard rails whichare always placed on both the turnout and main trackopposite the frog assisting in this action. A spring frogis more complicated in design than a stiff frog, not onlyon account of the movable parts and the spring, but alsoon account of the special tie plates and braces necessaryfor the proper working of the frog. 104 RAILROAD TRACK ANP CONSTRUCTION.
